Side 1 calculates gravity/volume conversions, such as the difference between the boiling gravity and the original gravity. This greatly facilitates extract brewers whom often use a concentrated boil and then dilute in the fermenter.
Side 1 also calculates the gravity contributions of various malt extracts, malts, and steeped grains, so that the original gravity of the batch can be calculated from the planned ingredients.
On side 2 the recipe gravity is used to calculate hop additions and their resulting IBUs. Different boiling times and wort gravities can be input to adjust the hop additions to the desired level of bitterness. A helpful list of common hop varieties and average % alpha acids is given for reference.
